  1. Whisk together the sugar, and cornstarch in a medium saucepan. Over medium heat, slowly add the milk, whisking constantly. Bring the mixture to a boil and continue to whisk for 2 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla and butter until melted.
  3. Pour into individual serving dishes. Chill for at least 2 hour.
  4. Serve topped with whipped cream, if desired.
